“The opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice, it’s conformity.” ― Rollo May
We love you.
We love you for who you are, but too often we play the system, wear a multitude of masks and act out a personality because we think it’s what people want to see/hear.
In my work, if there’s one point that causes the most discomfort — change is rarely comfortable — is the point where I ask my clients, “Yes, I get all that, but who are you?”. There’s lots of humming and hawing but, in the end, most people are so buried beneath their conditioned self, they almost give up answering before they’ve even started. Oh sure, they can regale me with their victories, titles and experience(s) but when you bear down on the real person, everything disappears.
But even if that’s way off beam, what I’m looking for is something that comes from the heart, something soul-ful that ignites their passion beyond the expectation of more.
If again you’re not sure what I’m getting at, it’s clear to me from my work that when you get stuck on the personal dream – “I want, I want” — you’ll never get below anything more than skin deep, but go to the impersonal dream, i.e. what your work will do for others that will live on beyond your earth-bound dominion, and you see fire return.
The trouble is we’re so terrified of stepping out from the shadow (of our false self) that we think the best way to cope with life is to bury the expression of true self. Please don’t for if you do, you might as well give up on life…now. This doesn’t mean you have to do something for the sake of it, but it does mean you’ve got to stop pretending that this version of life is the one you were born to. It’s not. It’s a poor substitute.
Am I saying that there might not be an element of uncertainty whilst you discover who you truly are? No. Indeed it might take a whole lifetime but freedom is not achieved in a single bound, it’s achieved day by day.
And if you want to know why I’m so passionate about this I don’t honestly know. I suppose it comes down to wanting to see all of us express our genius self, however that manifests.
So, what are you waiting for?
