“Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.” ― Henry James
To lead is not to govern but rather to lift people up.
But of course that’s not the way it’s taught or shown.
Do this (or else!); get that. For whom?
When I think back to those people who had, by commission or omission, managed to climb the very greasy pole and assumed said leadership title, let me just say, it wasn’t pretty.
Oh sure, there were moments of tenderness (very few actually) but mostly it was a case of bathing in another power trip.
For me the sine qua non of leadership is kindness.
(Is that so hard?)
Next time you’re in the presence of or hear a leader speak, listen to their tone of voice, the words uttered and their posture. Do they demonstrate kindness or do you get the impression that “it’s my way or the highway”?
One final thing. You don’t need a label to lead. In fact, we all lead but if you’re in charge, remember and cherish the honour of helping people become the best version of themselves. And if you don’t think that part of the brief then you don’t deserve the respect you’re constantly seeking.
