“How hurtful it can be to deny one’s true self and live a life of lies just to appease others.” ― June Ahern
What does it mean to be at one in business (and in life)?
To be congruent with who you are?
To live life through your work?
To make the most money possible?
Now, I’m sure you’re fed up with all these damned questions, but the truth is that too few owners ever stop to ask anything more profound than, “What’s next?”. You know the mentality that’s stuck doing it, doing it, doing it.
Imagine though if we could reignite our imagination and see the business as a way to come alive to true self? Or a place to test the limits of excellence in service — and I don’t mean the moribund view we share of customer service. Or somewhere to have fun.
In my work, it would be easy to ask the usual array of questions, e.g. What do you want?, How much do you want to earn? and How do we plot your and the company’s goals?, but I rarely do. For me, what’s most important is the inside-out view where personal transformation is the first order of the day. You see, as glib as it sounds, if I can get the owner to see the world through a new pair of eyes — usually that means adopting beginner’s mind — then what follows is so much easier. If this sounds abstract then what I mean is that if the owner is able to make sense of their life and their place in the world — Who am I? — then it’s a lot easier to bear down on the hard reality of business. At least that’s my take on things.
